Finished highpoly of Crimson Priest 3d character design. Personal project.

Here is my test of Nomads /Pocreate pipeline for hand-painted (no PBR) models. 4 hours of hand-painting texture was done in Procreate with some quick bakes of AO and Curvature map exported out of 3D-coat.
The model was done from scratch in Nomad. Surprisingly to me, Nomad had generated good enough UVs under 10 sec for 187k mesh. Compared to Zbrush it's much much faster and actually, workable I'm seriously considering using it for the quick UV part for my Zbrush concepts when I need to use tri-planar in Marmoset.
For supporting a more professional approach and for getting a nice base for painting from geometry, I had to do a quick bake in 3d coat and export AO and Curvature to Procreate. You can import your bakes on your model by "Insert a photo" while in "Show 2D texture mode".
Procreate had 0 hiccups working with heavy by-game standard mesh. Easy to paint, enjoyable brushes experience, however, there is a 2k texture limitation. Some people on youtube figured how to bypass it.
What does not work well: there is no unlit flat shading for hand-paint while you suppose to have 0 interference from shader information or lighting. I found the way around by using 4 lights setup for creating more flat shading.
Exporting does not work for any 3d related files (obj, usdz, textures png) if you are sending it to PC, so far I've seen ppl with Mac don't have this problem, but I just kept getting empty broken files. This is kind of a serious issue, I hope that Procreate team is aware of it. I managed to get obj from Nomad and for extracting texture I had to do some extra jumps. I Exported textures in PNG and saved them to Files. After that, I just created a new 2048 file and added my texture as a picture via Insert a photo. After that I just shared it through "Share Image" and it worked on my PC.
Final thoughts: hand-paint texturing in Procreate seems like a potentially great and very cheap alternative for the current hand-paint texturing pipeline but very raw and not supportive for actual use by in-game artists yet.
I do hope it will get polished more with time because it feels good hand-painting 3d models while laying on your couch.
Wanted to test eyes blinking with the glow theory I had and ended up with this smol Overseer teaser. Music by @woodmoodmusic (I’m persuading him to create a special ost for this Overseer while wrapping things out).
Here is a remake of Mr. Faberge head (name tba) - the quick 3d concept I did 3 or 4 years ago. Wanted to see how my skills improved and mint it as my first NFT drop. Honestly, posting on this blog is a bit too much work, so if you are looking for more frequent updates I post wips more often on my Instagram and Twitter. Also sometimes I stream the making of this character on Twitch.
